Lichen (Ramalina farinacea)

Ramalina farinacea is one of the most tolerant on lichen species to air pollution and, as a result, grows just about anywhere and is one of our more common lichens. In more polluted areas its growth can be stunted but near the sea they are often lovely 'flowering' specimens.

This is mainly a wood-based lichen growing on the bark of trees and shrubs. It does grow on rocks too but much is much less common on the rocky sea shore where it gives way to a couple of its close relatives.

This species has recently been given the common name of cartilage lichen.
